It's extra work but it does lessen the bulk a bit. I like to keep the bottom fabric too since that will ensure that the block is square. All that being said, I love that little quilt and I know some new mother will be so happy with it. P.S. Don't send me any triangles - I have a triangle-multiplier thing going on here.
