Shocked and Still Reeling

Yesterday was a shocking day.
I was at work minding my own business when my husband texted me that the company he worked for for almost 30 years was eliminating his entire department and
effective immediately he had no job.

I texted back that that was not funny and nice try, but he was serious.
After 30 years flying for the Masco Corporation he has no job.

Ok, ok, we can do this.
We have been planning on his retiring in 4 years, but that was with his pension.
Now that won't happen until he turns 65.  He is 56.
There is a severance package, thank goodness and it should be enough to allow us a little breathing room and time for him to look for another job.  WHEW.
The company did hire a placement company to help them all find new jobs.

I don't know what this will mean for us for the future.
Possibly a move?  Maybe an opportunity close to home?
We will be exploring all our options.
Thankfully I have my job which has our health benefits and
we have been making the changes for retirement.
I am hopeful that financially we will be ok.
It is unfortunate that the things we thought we had a few more years to save for and therefore use in our retirement are now put on eterna hold but there are worse things, right?

We still don't have all the information and, of course, are beginning to explore our options today.

Please keep my family in your prayers as we begin this new journey in our lives!

  1. Life has my twists and turns as we all know. You will survive. I had to retire early to take care of a disabled husband. Keep things as normal as you can and as one door closes another will open. Chris

  2. It is a shock when you find out your husband lost his job. We did this over five years ago. His company was absorbed by another and they basically killed that company letting everyone go including him. Fortunately, we had the emergency fund to tie us through and when he found another job close to 200 miles away, we were able to buy his vehicle outright due to having funds. I had to stay behind and get our house ready for the market and we needed two vehicles. Anyway, We did it and we survived with no income. Fortunately, you have a job that will tide you through. But, that doesn't make the worry and anxiety lessen. It does sadden me that your husband was let go 4 years before being eligible for a pension. :-(

  3. Thoughts and prayers for you and DH - it really is an emotional time for you two but especially for him - men have a difficult time with this (from my experience with my DH). They (or my DH did) feel like a failure to provide for the family. Think positive thoughts. Hugs.

  8. I've been there twice personally, and I have been fortunate enough to be able to say silver linings were in those dark clouds. Financially, I'm still picking up some of the pieces, but overall it has been for the best. My best wishes for silver linings for you both as you get through this!

  9. So sorry to hear this. It's a shame that you can devote your whole life to a company, and there's really no sure stability anymore...You will make it through- it might be tough at times, but you'll get through it. I will pray that the Lord will open up the right doors at the right time for your family. (((hugs)))

  10. We have had this happen twice, its hard & and I felt like punching the next person who told me it would all work out ok. It did in the end, but it was a long road. One thing that I'm sure helped the second time was I made my husband dye his hair. His hair has gone past grey to white and I was sure that in interviews they thought he was much older than he is. He would get interviews, but no 2nd interviews until he dyed his hair. Once he had dyed his hair he got 2 job offers in the same week.
Keep strong for your husband, and look after each other. All the best.

  15. Wow I'm sure that was a hit in the gut. I hate it when companies do this and give no warnings so that people can start to prepare. I hope that his new direction will come quickly and your plans can be restarted.

  16. Ugh! That is the worst. My company has been downsizing all over the place and some people have really been put into bad financial situations. It really sucks. I hope something good comes of this.

  18. I am sorry to hear this, I am so far behind in blogging and keeping up with everyone. Lot of stuff happening at our house too, we always manage to work it all out and I am sure with your husbands work history he will find something to keep your future plans in tact.
