Helping Out a Friend

Have you ever heard about a friend of a friend that had cancer that needed help?
I think most of us have friends, relatives or friends of friends that have had cancer.
Recently a good friend of mine told me about someone battling cancer.
She asked if I knew her.
I didn't actually know her, I knew of her.
She is in many of the same Flickr groups I'm in.
Maybe you know her too.  Yolanda.
She is keeping everyone up to date on her cancer here if you are interested.
My friend told me that some friends of Yolanda's were helping her to finish up her WIPs.
I wanted to help out too.
I emailed Yolanda's friend and asked if there was something I could do to help out with the WIP's.  Liberty, bless her heart, sent me a tumbler quilt all cut out.

I received the blocks in the mail a week or so ago and headed over to Cori's house last Thursday to lay the quilt out.
It's always interesting to do that.
Take someone's blocks and try to lay it out in a way that you think they will like.
It's interesting to see someone else's fabric choices.
Would you choose those fabrics?
Would they put it together the way you did?
Kind of a fun night.
Cori and I had fun laying the quilt top out and rearranging it until we were happy with how it looked.  This is what we came up with.

We felt like it was pretty balanced overall.
We picked it up, pinned the piles and then I took it home to sew.
Here is a close up of the fabrics Yolanda sent me.

I was on a mission on Friday night and got the entire top sewn.
It took me about 4 hours total to do, so not too bad.

Here is the completed top.
Not the best pic but my short DD1 was holding it up.

I am now waiting for the backing and the binding to arrive so I can send it off to Liz for quilting.
We are going with this pattern, Surf's Up, by Anne Bright.

I think it will work well with this quilt.
The recipient is a 19 year old young man (Yolanda's nephew).
If you are interested in helping (and they didn't ask me to get it quilted or bind it) please let me know.  I think watching her WIP's get finished is giving Yolanda great joy, and really, who doesn't need a little more joy in their life?
Thank you, Jeannette, for hooking me up.
Thank you Liberty for facilitating.
Thank you Yolanda for allowing me to help you and to bring a little joy into your life
 while you battle for yours.
I look forward to receiving the next top!

Have a wonderful day!

What a lovely "quilter" idea. Quilter's are the best. With a cancer treatment center in our town it seems to be all to prevalent.

We did this for one our Quilt Guild members - she really wanted the WIPs for her grandchildren/greatgrans finished - we met with her, helped pick finishing fabrics from her stash and all the quilts were completed (we have 4 members who are long armers). At her hillside ceremony, each great/grandchild was presented a special memory.

That is just about the nicest thing I ever heard and so indicative of the loving and caring nature of most quilters i think - bravo to all of you!

I'm in tears. I knew about all of this since I'm in the Bee Happy bee with Yolanda and the Mod Mosaic bee with Jeannette, but I'm still in tears. Your generosity, and the generosity of others continues to amaze me. Thank you.
